The Slowest School Day Ever

Today was definitely not one of my best days. First of all, I just recovered from the flu, and honestly, I still don’t feel that great. I don’t know why anyone would ever want to get the flu. In my personal opinion, it’s one of the worst things you can experience. You get a ridiculously high fever, you feel terrible, and you don’t even have enough energy to record a podcast. That’s how bad it is.

Anyway, I’ve also been getting on my Language Arts teacher’s nerves lately. Or maybe she’s just been really worried about me. Today, when I was leaving school, she asked, “Are you sure you don’t want one of those pizza slices?” And I had to refuse. No, thank you. I’m perfectly fine. Not that the pizza is bad. Actually, it’s really good. Apparently, someone who runs the pizza company used to attend Beaver, and somehow our school gets free pizza because of that. I’m not exactly sure how the whole thing works, but free pizza is always a good thing. The only problem is that it’s never quite warm enough.

But pizza isn’t going to solve everything. School has been pretty boring lately. I always imagined school as this exciting place where something interesting would happen every day. But no. It’s just boring. Really boring. We’re not exactly doing anything exciting besides learning, which I understand is technically the whole point of school. But still, couldn’t we make things a little more interesting?

Our Visual Arts class, for example, doesn’t always feel particularly productive. And then there’s Science. I genuinely don’t understand why anyone would schedule Science at eight in the morning. Eight! Who wakes up that early and thinks, “Wow, I would absolutely love to do some science right now”? Not me. I don’t even hate Science. I just don’t want to do it at that particular time. Couldn’t we move it somewhere else in the schedule? Apparently not. It’s not like I get to choose.

Of course, I know I’m lucky to attend a good school. Not everyone gets that opportunity, and I understand that. But being grateful doesn’t mean I can’t complain about things.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of people at school seem exhausted. Some students look completely burned out, and honestly, some teachers don’t seem much better. Sometimes I’ll ask a teacher, “How are you doing?” and they’ll just respond, “All right,” without much enthusiasm. They don’t exactly seem excited about teaching us. Maybe they’re just tired. I mean, if I had to wake up at three in the morning to teach a bunch of kids who don’t always appreciate my efforts, I probably wouldn’t be the happiest person in the world either. But still, I would expect a little more energy. Actually, quite a bit more.

Don’t get me wrong. Beaver is a good school. There are definitely things I like about it. The cafeteria, for example, has some really good lemonade. I would even say that lunchtime is one of the highlights of the entire school day. Sometimes it feels like the only thing we students truly care about is food. We spend all morning waiting for lunch, eat way too much, and then somehow have to survive the rest of the day.

And that’s another problem. Time moves unbelievably slowly at school. I really wish someone could make the school day go just a tiny bit faster. It feels like time moves about one inch every hour. Whenever we’re doing something fun, time flies. But when we’re doing something boring, time seems to move at approximately zero kilometers per hour.

Sometimes a teacher will announce, “We’re almost done!” and I’ll feel this enormous wave of relief. Finally! Freedom! And then she’ll add, “We only have two more hours left.”

TWO MORE HOURS? By that point, I already feel like ten years have passed.

That’s probably the best way to describe school lately. It’s not terrible. It’s not that I don’t appreciate being there. It’s just exhausting, especially when you’re still recovering from the flu. There are so many classes, so many activities, and so many things we’re expected to do. Sometimes I wish the entire school day could just move a little faster.

Or maybe I just need another three days of sleep.

Honestly, that sounds pretty good right now.
