Finally Getting Out of the House

Tomorrow I’m finally doing something I’ve actually been looking forward to. Recently, there hasn’t been that much happening at home that I’m excited about. I mean, there’s math homework, and I definitely don’t look forward to that. Other than that, things have been pretty normal. But tomorrow we’re leaving for a three-day school field trip, and I’m actually really excited, mostly because I just want to get out of the house for a little while.

I have my reasons. My mom has really been getting on my nerves lately. It feels like she is always on me about something. Maybe I’m not doing my homework fast enough, maybe I got a question wrong, or maybe I’m just not doing what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m not exactly sure. My dad isn’t helping much either. His advice is basically, “It’s okay. No one cares. Just do it.” Somehow that does not make me feel better at all.

I also have two friends who live in my neighborhood, but I haven’t seen them for a few months. That has been bothering me too. Nothing is actually wrong, but for some reason I just feel like something is off. I really want to get out of the neighborhood for a few days and go somewhere different. Luckily, tomorrow’s field trip gives me exactly that chance.

I thought packing for the trip would be exciting. It was not. Packing mostly turned into my mom telling me to get this and get that. Whenever I pack something, I always want to try it first. If I’m packing a hat, I want to put it on. If I’m packing a bedsheet, I almost want to lie down on it before putting it into the bag. I like testing everything, even though there is absolutely no reason to.

My mom thinks this is a complete waste of time and tells me to just get to the point. I wasn’t very happy about that, but I guess she does have a point. I kept goofing off anyway. At one point, I was basically strangling a pillow on the bed instead of packing. So maybe it does make some sense that she was getting annoyed. I definitely wasn’t doing my best job packing.

The packing list itself wasn’t very exciting either. I wish we were allowed to bring something more interesting, like drones. That would make packing much better. But obviously, that is not really how school field trips work.

Another thing I don’t completely understand is why school field trips often say you can’t bring money. I guess maybe they don’t want kids comparing who has more money and who has less. I can understand that, because it’s probably not good for kids to start judging who is richer or poorer. But at the same time, that is also part of real life. I’m not saying kids should show off money, but I still don’t totally understand why bringing a little money is always treated like such a big deal.

Even with all of that, I am extremely excited. I was literally jumping on the bed like a two-year-old. I probably shouldn’t have been doing that, but I was excited, so whatever.

The one thing I’m not excited about is the cold. Boston already feels cold enough to me, and I’m pretty sure the place we’re going will be even colder. I am completely fine with the temperature the way it is right now. I do not need it to get colder. If it gets much colder, I’m going to feel like I’m dying. Not actually dying, obviously, but still.

The weather hasn’t been great either. There has basically been a storm going on for about two and a half days, and I haven’t really seen the sun. Even when I went to my swim meet, it was still dark and miserable outside. I really want to see the sun again, although judging by the weather right now, that might be the exact opposite of what happens on this trip.

Still, I’m really looking forward to leaving tomorrow. I probably won’t be recording anything for the next three days because I’ll be away. But when I come back, I’ll probably have a lot to talk about. After all, what could possibly go wrong on a three-day school field trip with a bunch of middle schoolers?

Unchaperoned?

I’m kidding. Chaperoned.

Still, what could possibly go wrong?

Nothing, right?
