I Just Wish Spider-Man Had More Time

Welcome to my podcast. Today I’m going to talk about something that I’m not even sure is a hot topic, but it’s something I actually care about. If any of you care even remotely about Spider-Man, then maybe you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

Have you ever noticed something a little weird about the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies? There are three main movies so far, and even though a lot of people really like them, I have one big problem with the series. I don’t think it’s terrible, but honestly, parts of it kind of suck. I know “suck” is not exactly an academic word, but I’m still a kid, so I think I’m allowed to say it.

My biggest problem isn’t really Tom Holland himself. It’s more about the Spider-Man he plays and how fast everything happens around him. In the first movie, he fights Vulture. Then in the second movie, he fights Mysterio, and suddenly his identity gets exposed. I think that happened way too fast. I wish we could have had at least two or three movies where Peter Parker was still secretly Spider-Man before everybody found out who he was.

I’m not even sure I wanted him to get exposed at all. There were so many possibilities with Peter trying to balance school, friends, being Spider-Man, and having a normal life. I wanted to see more of that before everything became completely crazy. Instead, it felt like the movies kept rushing toward the next giant problem.

I also wish they had spent more time on Peter and MJ’s relationship. I liked their relationship, and I wanted it to continue longer before everything changed. By the end of No Way Home, MJ doesn’t remember Peter anymore, and I actually think that storyline is interesting. But I also wish we had gotten more time with them before that happened. It feels like something good started, and then suddenly it was gone.

That’s really my main problem with these movies: I always feel like they are building up to something, but I never feel like we get enough time to actually live inside the story. When I watched Homecoming, I thought, okay, this is just the beginning. They’re obviously building toward something much bigger. Then I watched Far From Home, and I still felt like they were building toward something. Then No Way Home came, and everything became huge, but somehow I still felt like there were parts of Peter’s story that had barely started.

Of course, Spider-Man was also part of Infinity War and Endgame, and I actually really like that. It was cool seeing him inside the bigger Marvel universe. But because all of those huge events happened around him, I think his own story sometimes lost time. He went from being a normal kid trying to become a superhero to fighting aliens, disappearing in the Blip, coming back, losing Tony Stark, fighting Mysterio, getting exposed, dealing with the multiverse, and then being forgotten by everyone. That is a lot.

And that’s exactly why I wish the movies had slowed down a little bit.

I’m not saying the storyline is bad. Actually, I think there are a lot of really good ideas in it. I just think there were even more possibilities that they didn’t fully explore. I wanted more time with Peter being an ordinary Spider-Man. I wanted more time with his friends. I wanted more time with MJ. I wanted more time before his identity became public. I wanted the story to become bigger, but not so quickly.

Maybe that’s just my personal opinion. A lot of people probably completely disagree with me, and that’s fine. I like Spider-Man. I like Tom Holland’s version too. I just keep watching these movies and thinking the same thing: there could have been so much more.

Sometimes a story doesn’t need something bigger.

Sometimes it just needs more time.
