Today I’m going to do a follow-up episode on yesterday’s plane crash, because more information has come out. The first thing I want to correct is what I said yesterday about how the plane actually crashed.
From what I understand now, the plane appears to have landed normally. The problem happened after it touched down. The systems that were supposed to slow the plane down did not seem to slow it enough, and the plane continued moving very fast down the runway.
You can see in the video that even when the plane reached the end of the runway, it still had a huge amount of speed. It didn’t just lightly hit a fence or stop near it. It went straight through the barrier and kept going into the area beyond the runway.
That is one of the things that surprised me the most.
What also looked strange to me was how intact the plane still seemed afterward. Obviously, it was badly damaged, and I’m not saying the plane was actually fine. But considering how fast it appeared to be moving and how far it traveled after leaving the runway, I expected the aircraft to look much more destroyed. Instead, large parts of the plane still looked surprisingly recognizable.
That really caught my attention because when I imagine a plane crash, I usually imagine an aircraft hitting something extremely hard, breaking apart, or being damaged across most of the plane. But this crash looked different. It seemed more like the aircraft kept moving forward with an enormous amount of momentum until one side of it took most of the damage.
The left side especially appeared to be heavily damaged. There was also a lot of smoke and fire around that side. But other parts of the aircraft looked much more intact.
I want to be careful here because I am definitely not an aircraft engineer, and I cannot explain exactly why the damage happened this way. I’m only describing what stood out to me when I watched the footage.
But that is also what makes this crash so interesting to me. The damage did not look evenly spread across the entire aircraft. One section seemed to take a huge amount of the impact while other sections remained much more recognizable.
I kept replaying the video because the whole accident looked different from the plane crashes I had seen before. Usually, when people think about a plane crash, they imagine the aircraft dropping out of the sky or hitting the ground very hard. This was different. The plane landed, continued down the runway, went through the barrier, and then crashed beyond the runway.
So this was really a runway-overrun accident rather than the kind of crash I originally imagined yesterday.
And I think that is the biggest correction I want to make in this follow-up episode.
Yesterday, I was trying to understand the accident only a few hours after it happened, when there was still very little information available. Now that more footage and information have come out, the sequence of events looks clearer.
There are still a lot of questions, especially about why the aircraft was unable to stop and why the damage was concentrated the way it was. Investigators will have to determine exactly what happened.
For now, the part I find most interesting is how unusual the crash looked compared with what I expected. The plane had enough momentum to leave the runway and continue through barriers, yet much of the aircraft still remained recognizable afterward.
That was the part that surprised me the most.
