The Miami Cargo Plane Crash: What Went Wrong?

Today I’m going to talk about a plane crash that happened only a few hours ago in Miami. It involved a cargo plane, and it has already become a very serious accident. At least five people were killed and five others were injured, with three of them reported to be in critical condition.

The aircraft was a Boeing 767 cargo plane flying for Amazon Prime Air and operated by a company called 21 Air. It had flown from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami International Airport. At around 2 p.m., the plane landed in Miami, but instead of stopping normally on the runway, it overran the end of the runway, crossed into another area, struck several vehicles on the ground, and caught fire.

When you first look at some of the pictures and videos, the whole thing is pretty confusing. There is a huge amount of smoke, especially around one side of the aircraft, but parts of the plane still look surprisingly intact. That immediately makes you ask the obvious question: what actually went wrong?

And this is where I think we have to be careful, because right now nobody actually knows the final answer.

At first, when I watched the footage, I started thinking that maybe there had been some kind of mechanical failure, or maybe one side of the aircraft had lost control during the landing. The plane seemed to end up at a strange angle, and there was heavy damage and fire around parts of the aircraft. But those are observations from the footage, not proof of what caused the crash.

What investigators do know is that the aircraft overran the runway after landing. One of the big questions now is whether it touched down too far along the runway and simply did not have enough distance left to stop. Investigators will also look at the weather, the wind, the brakes, the engines, the landing gear, the pilots’ actions, and basically every system on the aircraft.

And that is actually one of the most interesting parts of a plane crash investigation. Something can look obvious from a video, but the real cause can be completely different. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe it was a mechanical problem. Maybe it involved the landing itself. Maybe several small things happened at the same time.
We just don’t know yet.
Another thing that makes this crash unusual is that it was a cargo plane. Cargo aircraft usually carry far fewer people than passenger planes, but that does not mean an accident cannot become deadly. In this case, the aircraft went beyond the runway and struck vehicles on the ground, so some of the victims may not even have been on the plane.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash right now, and they will probably spend a lot of time examining exactly where the plane touched down, how fast it was moving, whether the braking systems worked correctly, what the pilots were doing, and what the weather was like at that exact moment.

So was this the pilots’ fault? Was it the aircraft? Was it the weather? Or was it a combination of several things?
Right now, we simply do not know.

And I actually think that is the most important thing to say. When a crash has just happened, everyone wants an immediate explanation. We see the smoke, the damaged aircraft, and the videos online, and our brain immediately tries to build a story. But an investigation exists because what looks obvious is not always what actually happened.

So for now, five people are dead, five others are injured, and investigators are trying to understand why a normal landing turned into a deadly runway overrun.
When we know more, maybe I’ll come back and do another episode explaining what the investigators actually found.
