The new MacBook Neo is supposed to be one of the best budget laptops, but is it really worth buying, or is it just another cheaper laptop? I was able to try my friend’s MacBook Neo and compare it with my own MacBook Air. After looking at the keyboard, build quality, performance, ports, price, and battery life, I think the answer is a little more complicated than just saying one laptop is better than the other.
First, let’s look at the keyboard. The MacBook Air has a backlit keyboard, which makes it easier to type in darker places. The MacBook Neo does not have keyboard backlighting. This may not be a huge problem for everyone, but it can make the Neo less convenient if you are working at night or in a darker room.
Next is build quality. Surprisingly, the two laptops feel quite similar. Both have an aluminum body, which gives them a smooth and solid look. However, after using both of them, I still think the MacBook Air feels slightly more polished overall.
Performance is another important difference. I use the MacBook Air as my main laptop, and in normal schoolwork, the difference between the Air and the Neo is not always very noticeable. However, when I open more applications or do more demanding work, the MacBook Air feels faster. The Air also has better ports and can handle more than the Neo.
Now let’s compare them by category. The first category is price, and this is where the MacBook Neo clearly wins. The Neo costs about $599, while the MacBook Air costs around $1,099. That is a big difference, especially for students or families looking for a less expensive computer.
For build quality and keyboard features, I would give the point to the MacBook Air because it has keyboard backlighting and feels slightly better overall. Battery life is another win for the Air, since it can last up to around 18 hours on a full charge.
So does this mean the MacBook Air is automatically the better choice? Not exactly. The Air wins in more categories, but the Neo costs much less. If you are buying a laptop mainly for schoolwork, web browsing, writing, and basic everyday tasks, I think the MacBook Neo gives you a lot for its price. You probably will not be disappointed with what you get.
In the end, I think the MacBook Neo does deserve to be called one of the best budget laptops. It may not be the best MacBook overall, but that is not really the point. If you need a laptop mainly for school and everyday use, the Neo is a great choice. However, if you need more speed, better battery life, or stronger performance for heavier tasks, then the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro would probably be the better option.
