Today was my second day of school, and honestly, it was not that much better than the first one.
I tried again to see the dog I met yesterday, but that did not really work out. The dog is really cute, and I could see the lights on inside the house, so I was very tempted to just open the door and go see it. Obviously, I could not actually do that. So I kept walking, which was probably the correct decision, even though I was still disappointed that I did not get to see the dog.
School starts at 7:45, which is pretty early. When I woke up, I felt completely deprived of sleep because I usually go to bed around ten, so getting up that early did not feel very natural. That was a great start to the day. But I still got up, got dressed, ate breakfast, and walked to school like a normal person.
The worst part of the morning was still not being able to see the dog. But the second I walked through the school doors, I was actually pretty happy.
The first class was Humanities, which was also the class I was most nervous about. I was not really sure what to expect, but the idea of seriously sitting down and doing history did not sound especially exciting to me. When I walked in, though, I realized it seemed like one of those classes that looks really hard but is not actually that hard, at least for now. I am pretty sure Humanities might eventually turn into torture later in the year, but right now, it is fine.
I am also kind of dreading Spanish. I already have some Spanish experience because I used Baselang over the summer, but even after doing it for the whole summer, I still did not feel completely prepared. Baselang is not terrible, but the teachers change a lot unless you keep choosing the same one. Some of the teachers are great, but overall, I never really felt like I had built a clear foundation. I understand that school Spanish has to start slowly, but I still feel a little unsure about it. Sometimes I think that if I had just taken Chinese, I probably could have aced the tests before the class even started. But it is all right.
Now I am going to talk about something you probably did not expect me to talk about, which is teriyaki chicken.
Today we had teriyaki chicken with rice and some kind of bread. I do not even really know what kind of bread it was. It was just bread. Bread with crusts. Nothing especially surprising, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
One thing I really did not like today was all the shuffling around between classes. My computer also refused to log in, which definitely did not help my mood. I really, really do not like the way middle school works in this sense. Elementary school had everything figured out. You stayed in one place, everything was simple, and life made sense. Then middle school starts, and suddenly everyone has to move from room to room all day. I still do not understand the point of that.
We also had something called R-Time, which in my mind sounds like it should mean rest time, but it is actually more like forced fun activities. Forced fun is not always the worst thing in the world, but when you are forced to do something that is supposed to be fun, it can become not fun very quickly.
This time, though, it was actually pretty interesting. We had a competition where we were supposed to build the tallest structure possible using popsicle sticks, string, and other materials. None of our structures really looked like normal buildings. They mostly looked like a bunch of popsicle sticks tied together, trying to become some kind of two-trillion-foot skyscraper.
At first, we actually built something like a castle. Then, with about five seconds left, the whole thing collapsed. That was when one of my friends basically showed us that we had all been thinking way too hard.
We had a balloon and a very long piece of string. He cut the string, tied it to the balloon, let the balloon float all the way up to the ceiling, and then attached a popsicle stick to it.
Done.
Our structure had officially reached the maximum possible height in the room——The ceiling.
For a moment, we thought we had won.
Then other groups started doing the same thing, and eventually everyone had something reaching the ceiling. At that point, there was really nowhere else to go. You cannot exactly go through the ceiling and keep building all the way to the moon.
So technically, I do not think anyone really won.
Later, we also had to come up with ideas about fair play and being nice to other people, like saying things such as, “You look great today.” I am not saying that is bad. It is just not really my thing.
There are still a lot of new things coming up this week, and right now I am basically just trying to stay alive.
Also, I should probably get good grades, because if I do not, I am probably going to get absolutely destroyed by my mother.
But that is all right. That is life.
So if I had to describe today in one word, I would probably say: average.
And the saddest part of the entire day was still the same.
I never got to see the dog.
